We visited the New York Café in Budapest after seeing it from the hop-on hop-off bus and being impressed by the photos and reputation. The place is indeed very beautiful, with stunning interior design and a luxurious atmosphere. At first, everything felt special and exciting.
However, the service was very disappointing. We waited about 15 minutes to get a table, and then around 20 minutes before anyone came to take our order. We ordered two lungo coffees and one pancake. The pancake arrived after another 20 minutes, but the coffees were still missing. We had to ask multiple times about them, and the answer was simply that there were “too many coffee orders” and we just had to wait, without any apology or explanation.
In total, we spent almost one and a half hours there just for two coffees and one pancake. We also had to go to the counter ourselves to ask for the bill because nobody came.
The total price was around 42 euros, including service charge, which felt high considering the poor level of service. Even the restrooms were not clean, which was disappointing for such a famous and expensive place.
Overall, the café is worth visiting for its interior and photos, but the service and organization did not meet expectations.

If you are looking to leave a restaurant feeling angry, hungry, and robbed, this is the place for you. Our experience at New York Café was an absolute fiasco costing 27,640 HUF.

The only thing worth seeing is the decor, but even that was denied to us: we were tucked away in a back corner where you couldn't see anything. It felt like being seated with the coal shovelers on the Titanic while everyone else enjoyed the luxury.

The service is abysmal. You have to practically hunt down the waiters just to get noticed. To make matters worse, they served our food before our drinks. After asking for the drinks again, we were told they would take 20 minutes—a blatant lie, as when the coffees finally arrived, the foam had already collapsed. This means they had been sitting there ready for ages, and no one bothered to bring them.

The food was a total letdown (the 6,000+ HUF Eggs Benedict was a joke). They also charged us an unlisted supplement for non-dairy milk without any prior notice.

This is a textbook tourist trap. Don't expect a human response if you complain; they just copy-paste the same generic replies to every negative review. Save your money and your dignity: Budapest has wonderful places to visit, but this definitely isn't one of them

Wonderful experience at the New York Cafe in Budapest. Besides the incredibly gorgeous architecture, that is honestly breathtaking, the service is fantastic. Our garçon was Sándor and he was so polite and attentive! 100% recommend to visit.
The extra of the experience was the live music; so much talent!!!
I’d recommend putting your phone in your purse/pocket and soak in everything that place is.

We had a truly wonderful dining experience at the New York Café, one of the most stunning and atmospheric places we have ever visited. The setting is absolutely breathtaking, with magnificent décor that transports you to another era.

The service was impeccable and the food was exceptionally delicious. The experience was elevated even more by the enchanting sounds of the violin, which perfectly complemented the elegant atmosphere.

If you are visiting Budapest, this is a place you absolutely must visit.

Special thanks to Floris for the outstanding service and his warm hospitality!

A truly unforgettable experience in one of the most beautiful cafés in the world. The interior is absolutely breathtaking, with stunning architecture, elegant decorations, chandeliers, and an atmosphere that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into another era.

The food and drinks were very enjoyable, beautifully presented, and matched the luxurious setting. Everything felt refined and carefully prepared, making the visit feel special from start to finish.

The café can be busy because of its popularity, but the experience is worth it for the incredible atmosphere and unique setting. It’s not just a place to eat or drink coffee — it’s one of those places you visit for the entire experience.

A must-visit spot in Budapest, especially if you appreciate history, architecture, and elegant cafés. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip.

We visited New York Café in Budapest and, despite the queue being out the door, only had to wait around five minutes for a table.

The café was extremely busy. Inside, it was absolutely breathtaking, but also noisy and quite crowded, with tables packed closely together.

We ordered a homemade lemonade, an orange juice, and two ice creams. Unfortunately, service was slow. It took around 30 minutes for the ice creams to arrive and a further 10 minutes for the drinks. I didn't particularly like the lemonade, although my partner enjoyed it. The orange juice was nice but seemed expensive compared to elsewhere. The ice creams, however, were delicious.

We were seated next to the pianist, and the live music, including the violin, created a lovely atmosphere.

When we asked for the bill, we had to wait another 15 minutes. While it's understandable that the café is very busy, the service felt a little chaotic.

The final bill came to £54. Was it worth it? I'm glad we visited and experienced such an iconic venue, but personally, I didn't feel it lived up to all the hype.

Very disappointing service.

Vanda herself was very kind and pleasant, but the overall management and service of the restaurant were extremely disappointing.

After we asked for the bill, we waited for almost 20 minutes without receiving it. We then asked another waitress, and after waiting again for a while we were finally able to pay.

Because we were genuinely unhappy with the service, we asked if the service charge could be removed. However, the waitress dismissed our request in a rather dismissive and careless manner.

After paying, we spoke to the manager about this issue. Unfortunately, his attitude was also unacceptable. He said that such a waiting time was normal because the café only had two payment machines while many customers were waiting to pay. In my opinion, this is not a reasonable justification for making customers wait so long just to settle the bill, and the manager seemed completely indifferent to our concern.

Overall, I am very disappointed with the service attitude at this café. It is difficult not to wonder whether there may have been some level of discrimination involved, because the way both the waitress and the manager treated me and my friend was far from the normal level of respect that service staff should show to customers.

Do not patronize the New York Café in Budapest. Though it is beautiful, just go in and look and/or take a picture. But, do not give them your money. The food is okay, nothing outstanding. The service is atrocious. The servers do not want to be there, and could care less if you are. No matter the cost of your meal—and it is expensive—their policy is that you can not get a glass of water. You must buy a bottle of water or order a drink. The tap water in Budapest is excellent, there is no reason for this. We love Budapest and the Hungarian people; this place represents neither except in architecture. Go have a coffee at the Hotel Párisi Udvar or an amazing pastry at the beautiful Café Gerbeaud.

I didn't expect the food to be great, seeing that the NY Cafe is such a tourist destination, but it wasn't even good. It was obvious that my pasta had been sitting for a while before being brought to my table. It had very little flavor (had to douse it in the shakable plain white salt & pepper provided - not even table grinders). The timing of the food delivery was off...bringing bread/butter after I've eaten my pasta. (Bread is not dessert.) The staff was equally bland at best - displaying no genuine interest in my well being. I was made to wait to be seated when there were several empty tables. The live classical instrumental ensemble and piano were lovely to listen to but the music selections were pop or broadway - why not classical? That too was not my cup-o-tea. The space is beautiful, no doubt, but that's all. For what they charge, they could do a lot better. It's a shame they don't. If you enjoy being completely ripped off in gorgeous surroundings, visit the Dohany Street Synagogue and visit the NY Cafe afterwards. Or skip both, view some of the numerous videos posted by others, and spend your hard earned money elsewhere where you are appreciated and provided with fare worthy of the human palate.

Great atmosphere. The music was live and non-stop. I had the chicken paprikash, it was quite good. I also had the chocolate sponge cake, great as well. Noemi was my server. She was great. So attentive and helpful with the menu. Even as it was very busy she made eye contact to check if I needed anything. Would recommend getting a reservation. There was a very long line to get in and I just walked up, barely waited and was seated. Worth checking out even though it draws it many tourist.

The New York Café is impressive inside, with a beautiful, elegant interior that makes it worth seeing at least once for the atmosphere alone. It really feels like a landmark more than just a café.

However, in my opinion, it is quite overhyped in terms of price and overall food experience. The Dobos cake I tried, were fine but nothing particularly special. The drink was good, but also something you could find anywhere else.

What made the visit memorable wasn’t really the food, but a spontaneous moment where, while I was recording, a girl asked to sing with the live band. That unexpected moment was actually the highlight of the experience.

Overall, I would say it’s worth visiting once for the interior and atmosphere, but not necessarily for the food or value.

Don’t even bother you queue to get in and the whole thing is an influencer circus. Paid £22 for a coffee and hot chocolate. Hot chocolate came cold and both drinks took ages to arrive to the point we contemplated leaving. Venue is stunning but you could probably get the same architecture in the opera house or something. I’m sure the food is quite nice but overall very overhyped

it is a very popular cafe in the Budapest, but I do not recommend you to go if you do not have enough money or free time. first of all, the waiting period was very long, about 30 minutes if there are no too many people waiting in line. secondly, the service is terrible when you compare it to the price that you have to pay for the food or the drinks. the waiter misunderstood our instructions and bringing us the wrong food for 2 times continuously. and also the serving period was really long. We sit there for about 20 minutes without any waiter to serve us, and after we placed our orders, we didn't receive our food for half an hour after our repeated request that we would like our serving to come up faster. and basically, there was no serving the waiter and waitresses just bring the plates and knives and forks to your table without any introduction of the food, without any correct allocation of the food, without any arrangements of the dishes or the knives or forks. Generally, they just leave all the things to the customers themselves, and they did not do any service that is worth the 15 or 20% of service tax that they requested. and to be honest, the food was really just very, very ordinary without anything that stands out considering its relatively high price in Budapest, it's because I come from Paris and I think the prize already matches the middle upper class restaurants in Paris, however, their service and the quality of their food is really no match to any kind of restaurant in Paris. the only thing that can be praised is the scenery and the inter decoration of the cafe that is indeed very exquisite and beautiful. However, if you just come here for the view and the sizing, I recommend just to order a drink or a piece of cake and do not waste too much time in this spot. to keep my manners, I cannot use worse words to describe this place, but in general, I do not recommend anyone without enough money or free time to come here. Just it's just a theory, ordinary cafe, and if you have been to other western European cities and experience their service and their quality of food, you will surely be disappointed by this cafe.

This isn't just food, this is an experience. I don't understand the haters, the drinks and desserts were excellent. We're they pricey? Yes, but this isn't a run of the mill cafe. You're getting the stunning building, outstanding service (thank you K. Noeimi, you were amazing), and live music by professional musicians. So for all that it's very well priced. I was expecting a queue to get in but fortunately we rocked when it was only drinks and dessert service. I got the 25k hot chocolate which was thick and chocolatey, and the Hungarian sponge cake dessert which I thought was excellent.
Absolutely worth a visit.

Enjoyed this place a lot!!! Staff were polite from the beginning to the end, I got my order on time, and tiramisu was absolutely delicious. No words to describe about atmosphere. It’s a super place for artistic souls. Live music made everything even magical. I don’t understand 1star reviews about this place. It worths every amount to pay and enjoy your time. Thank you!!!

I visited New York Caffe recently. The interior design is beautiful and I really liked the atmosphere. The music was also very nice and relaxing ❤️

The food looks very good and well presented. However, the table and seating were not very comfortable, which made it a bit difficult to fully enjoy the experience. The place was also a little crowded.

Unfortunately, the toilet was very disappointing and not up to a good standard.

Overall, it’s a lovely place with great design and music, but improvements in seating comfort and cleanliness of the restroom would make the experience much better.

New York Café is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cafés in Budapest. The interior is breathtaking, with ornate decoration, grand staircases and lavish details, while the exterior is equally impressive and hints at the opulence waiting inside.

Unfortunately, the experience was let down by mediocre and surprisingly slow service, despite the restaurant being less than half full during my visit. The food was also overpriced for what was delivered, with the taste and quality failing to justify the premium prices.

That said, the building itself is worth seeing. My recommendation would be to order the cheapest drink on the menu, take the time to appreciate the spectacular surroundings and soak up the atmosphere, then head elsewhere for a meal. Budapest has no shortage of excellent restaurants offering better value and, in many cases, better food.

A beautiful piece of architecture., located in Anantara Hotel. An old New York Life Insurance headquarters for Europe. Stunning from inside. Be ready to wait in line for long before you get inside. But once you're in you won't feel like coming out.
Talking about food... their menu is quite expansive.
We were there for brunch & truly enjoyed it. Although the service was a bit on slower side.
Would i go again... definitely !!!
Also being a fan of Anantara hotels I would love to stay at this beautiful property next time.

So my friends and I decided to visit this cafe while we were wondering around Blaha Lujza. We didn’t know anything about the cafe, but we decided to go in cause there was a huge line outside and thought this place must be good. And it was! The food was delicious, but not gonna lie the coffee I had was not the best. But cocktails were extremely delicious! Actually the best thing about cafe wasn’t even the food it was mostly about this beautiful young lady who served us. If I remember her name correctly it was Bogi. She genuinely served us with a beautiful smile, and funny jokes. We were able to chit chat a bit and she told us about the history of the cafe which we didn’t know about when going into the cafe. This cafe is literally one of the best cafes in the WORLD. I’m not even kidding it’s on some kind of list. So yeah it was really great to chit chat with this young beautiful lady and learn about the history of the cafe. I think as a tourist prices are affordable but I’m not sure if it’s affordable for locals. At the end it’s a once in a lifetime moment in Budapest, if you’re not planning to visit again. I would say it’s worth the time and money. Genuinely the ambiance of this cafe is on another level. Thanks again beautiful young lady Bogi for your beautiful kind assistance!

This place is absolutely incredible! ✨ ✨✨New York Café is not just a café — it’s a true masterpiece. The interior takes your breath away from the very first moment: stunning frescoed ceilings, grand chandeliers, and beautiful golden details make you feel like you’ve stepped into a palace.

The service was excellent — attentive, polite staff and everything was served beautifully. I ordered a cocktail, which was delicious and very nicely presented. The Layered Hungarian potato with bacon and cheese was absolutely amazing — rich, comforting, and full of flavor. The combination of tender potatoes, crispy bacon, and melted cheese was perfect.

The atmosphere is truly special — ideal for experiencing the spirit of Budapest and taking beautiful photos. Yes, the prices are higher than average, but the experience and ambiance are absolutely worth it. I highly recommend visiting! 💙💛✨✨
