Today I had the pleasure – or rather, the displeasure – of visiting this cafe. I must admit, the interior is stunning, and since I was with a large group, I was pleasantly surprised that we didn't have to wait in line. However, that’s where the compliments end.
The waitress took our order but seemed completely spacey. Then the endless waiting began. The staff just drifted between tables, and most of them didn't speak English. Our food arrived after 30 minutes, but the coffees were nowhere to be seen. Another half hour passed before we finally got them, except for one espresso. To make matters worse, nobody bothered to clear the dirty dishes from our table. In the end, my friend had to go to the kitchen herself to remind them about the missing espresso.
The 'cherry on top' was the fine print in the menu: a 15% service charge added to the bill. With service like this, you can't even call it 'service.' Besides, nobody asked us which currency we wanted to pay in; the bill was issued in Forints, and card payments were only accepted in Forints, even though prices were also listed in Euros My advice? Admire the interior through the window, but go somewhere else for your coffee.

If you are looking to leave a restaurant feeling angry, hungry, and robbed, this is the place for you. Our experience at New York Café was an absolute fiasco costing 27,640 HUF.
The only thing worth seeing is the decor, but even that was denied to us: we were tucked away in a back corner where you couldn't see anything. It felt like being seated with the coal shovelers on the Titanic while everyone else enjoyed the luxury.
The service is abysmal. You have to practically hunt down the waiters just to get noticed. To make matters worse, they served our food before our drinks. After asking for the drinks again, we were told they would take 20 minutes—a blatant lie, as when the coffees finally arrived, the foam had already collapsed. This means they had been sitting there ready for ages, and no one bothered to bring them.
The food was a total letdown (the 6,000+ HUF Eggs Benedict was a joke). They also charged us an unlisted supplement for non-dairy milk without any prior notice.
This is a textbook tourist trap. Don't expect a human response if you complain; they just copy-paste the same generic replies to every negative review. Save your money and your dignity: Budapest has wonderful places to visit, but this definitely isn't one of them

★★★★★ 5+ Stars
Highly recommended New York Café! The place is absolutely stunning, and the quality of the live musicians truly transports you back in time. The atmosphere is elegant, magical, and perfect for special occasions.
A special 5+ star recognition for our waiter, K. Sandor. From the moment we arrived, he welcomed us with warmth, professionalism, and genuine kindness. He is extremely polite and clearly someone with remarkable values.
We mentioned we were celebrating our anniversary, and he surprised us with a delicious cheesecake — absolutely delightful. He also thoughtfully brought us a brochure about the café’s history, which made the experience even more special.
We ordered the Dubai Coffee and a latte — both were excellent and perfect for a celebration night. The menu is very extensive, and everything looks exquisite.
We will definitely return — especially to be attended again by our friend K. Sandor!

Wonderful experience at the New York Cafe in Budapest. Besides the incredibly gorgeous architecture, that is honestly breathtaking, the service is fantastic. Our garçon was Sándor and he was so polite and attentive! 100% recommend to visit.
The extra of the experience was the live music; so much talent!!!
I’d recommend putting your phone in your purse/pocket and soak in everything that place is.

We had a truly wonderful dining experience at the New York Café, one of the most stunning and atmospheric places we have ever visited. The setting is absolutely breathtaking, with magnificent décor that transports you to another era.
The service was impeccable and the food was exceptionally delicious. The experience was elevated even more by the enchanting sounds of the violin, which perfectly complemented the elegant atmosphere.
If you are visiting Budapest, this is a place you absolutely must visit.
Special thanks to Floris for the outstanding service and his warm hospitality!

New York Café is often described as one of the most beautiful cafés in the world, and visually, it truly is stunning. The interiors are grand and elegant, and the ambience is impressive. However, the café is extremely crowded—there was a long queue stretching all the way to the road, clearly driven by its reputation and décor.
Unfortunately, the food and service did not live up to the setting. We ordered a Caesar salad, pasta, and an ice cream. The pasta and ice cream were good, but the Caesar salad was a major disappointment—the lettuce was cut in such large pieces that it was difficult to eat. I would strongly advise skipping it.
The service also felt indifferent. The staff didn’t seem particularly interested in the dining experience and appeared more focused on the size of the bill than on customer service. Another uncomfortable aspect was the mandatory tipping at the time of billing—the payment wouldn’t proceed unless a tip was added. This is something I personally do not appreciate, especially when the food or service hasn’t met expectations.
Overall, New York Café is worth visiting once for the breathtaking interiors and ambience, but expectations for food and service should be kept low. Go for the experience and photos, not for a memorable meal.

Very disappointing service.
Vanda herself was very kind and pleasant, but the overall management and service of the restaurant were extremely disappointing.
After we asked for the bill, we waited for almost 20 minutes without receiving it. We then asked another waitress, and after waiting again for a while we were finally able to pay.
Because we were genuinely unhappy with the service, we asked if the service charge could be removed. However, the waitress dismissed our request in a rather dismissive and careless manner.
After paying, we spoke to the manager about this issue. Unfortunately, his attitude was also unacceptable. He said that such a waiting time was normal because the café only had two payment machines while many customers were waiting to pay. In my opinion, this is not a reasonable justification for making customers wait so long just to settle the bill, and the manager seemed completely indifferent to our concern.
Overall, I am very disappointed with the service attitude at this café. It is difficult not to wonder whether there may have been some level of discrimination involved, because the way both the waitress and the manager treated me and my friend was far from the normal level of respect that service staff should show to customers.

Don’t even bother you queue to get in and the whole thing is an influencer circus. Paid £22 for a coffee and hot chocolate. Hot chocolate came cold and both drinks took ages to arrive to the point we contemplated leaving. Venue is stunning but you could probably get the same architecture in the opera house or something. I’m sure the food is quite nice but overall very overhyped

it is a very popular cafe in the Budapest, but I do not recommend you to go if you do not have enough money or free time. first of all, the waiting period was very long, about 30 minutes if there are no too many people waiting in line. secondly, the service is terrible when you compare it to the price that you have to pay for the food or the drinks. the waiter misunderstood our instructions and bringing us the wrong food for 2 times continuously. and also the serving period was really long. We sit there for about 20 minutes without any waiter to serve us, and after we placed our orders, we didn't receive our food for half an hour after our repeated request that we would like our serving to come up faster. and basically, there was no serving the waiter and waitresses just bring the plates and knives and forks to your table without any introduction of the food, without any correct allocation of the food, without any arrangements of the dishes or the knives or forks. Generally, they just leave all the things to the customers themselves, and they did not do any service that is worth the 15 or 20% of service tax that they requested. and to be honest, the food was really just very, very ordinary without anything that stands out considering its relatively high price in Budapest, it's because I come from Paris and I think the prize already matches the middle upper class restaurants in Paris, however, their service and the quality of their food is really no match to any kind of restaurant in Paris. the only thing that can be praised is the scenery and the inter decoration of the cafe that is indeed very exquisite and beautiful. However, if you just come here for the view and the sizing, I recommend just to order a drink or a piece of cake and do not waste too much time in this spot. to keep my manners, I cannot use worse words to describe this place, but in general, I do not recommend anyone without enough money or free time to come here. Just it's just a theory, ordinary cafe, and if you have been to other western European cities and experience their service and their quality of food, you will surely be disappointed by this cafe.

Visiting New York Café in Budapest was an unforgettable experience. The interior is absolutely stunning and truly lives up to its reputation as one of the most beautiful cafés in the world. The atmosphere, music, and attention to detail made our visit very special.
I would especially like to highlight our waiter Vanda- Sunshine, who was extremely professional, attentive, and polite. Her excellent English, warm attitude, and helpful recommendations made us feel very welcome and well taken care of. The service was outstanding from start to finish.

Enjoyed this place a lot!!! Staff were polite from the beginning to the end, I got my order on time, and tiramisu was absolutely delicious. No words to describe about atmosphere. It’s a super place for artistic souls. Live music made everything even magical. I don’t understand 1star reviews about this place. It worths every amount to pay and enjoy your time. Thank you!!!

I visited New York Caffe recently. The interior design is beautiful and I really liked the atmosphere. The music was also very nice and relaxing ❤️
The food looks very good and well presented. However, the table and seating were not very comfortable, which made it a bit difficult to fully enjoy the experience. The place was also a little crowded.
Unfortunately, the toilet was very disappointing and not up to a good standard.
Overall, it’s a lovely place with great design and music, but improvements in seating comfort and cleanliness of the restroom would make the experience much better.

Very stylish café with poor service.
Overall experience was ok, except for the payment part. Since we only ordered a coffee and a pie for each (both were great), i cannot say more about the rest.
WATCH OUT for this guy. The real treachery begins when you ask to pay by card. I do not know if it’s a common practice in this place, but the waiter that came to bring us the PoS brought the bill on paper, opened it, and while laying it on the table, he put the amount on the device, but also pressed 10% tip (no tip is selected by default - i know that because i watched it happen at the table next to me), apart from the service fee (15% i think) included in the bill. He was also very pushy, put the device in my face (slightly tilted so i see the contactless sign on the upper part, but not the tip amount which was on the bottom part of the screen, asking me to put my card. It was giving “come on, stop looking at the amount and just swipe!” energy.
I watched closely when he came again with the PoS at the table next to me. Guess what: the same practice was applied to someone else.
I understand that everyone wants money but they can earn it instead of acting like this.
As a customer, it made me upset enough to just leave this well deserved review. If you care about your image as a famous café, make these employees go away.

Staying at the Anantara property was worth it for the seamless access alone. No waiting in the famous lines for the New York Café. I only tried their breakfast buffet and it was outstanding.
The menu is impressive, offering everything from perfectly made Eggs Benedict and a variety of premium coffee drinks to Swiss breakfast options. I especially loved their selection of detox drinks and fresh juices.
For those debating where to go, the breakfast here is very comparable to the Párisi Udvar breakfast for the same price. Both options are spectacular, so "pick your poison" 😆. You can't go wrong with either for a high-end experience.

So my friends and I decided to visit this cafe while we were wondering around Blaha Lujza. We didn’t know anything about the cafe, but we decided to go in cause there was a huge line outside and thought this place must be good. And it was! The food was delicious, but not gonna lie the coffee I had was not the best. But cocktails were extremely delicious! Actually the best thing about cafe wasn’t even the food it was mostly about this beautiful young lady who served us. If I remember her name correctly it was Bogi. She genuinely served us with a beautiful smile, and funny jokes. We were able to chit chat a bit and she told us about the history of the cafe which we didn’t know about when going into the cafe. This cafe is literally one of the best cafes in the WORLD. I’m not even kidding it’s on some kind of list. So yeah it was really great to chit chat with this young beautiful lady and learn about the history of the cafe. I think as a tourist prices are affordable but I’m not sure if it’s affordable for locals. At the end it’s a once in a lifetime moment in Budapest, if you’re not planning to visit again. I would say it’s worth the time and money. Genuinely the ambiance of this cafe is on another level. Thanks again beautiful young lady Bogi for your beautiful kind assistance!

This place is absolutely incredible! ✨ ✨✨New York Café is not just a café — it’s a true masterpiece. The interior takes your breath away from the very first moment: stunning frescoed ceilings, grand chandeliers, and beautiful golden details make you feel like you’ve stepped into a palace.
The service was excellent — attentive, polite staff and everything was served beautifully. I ordered a cocktail, which was delicious and very nicely presented. The Layered Hungarian potato with bacon and cheese was absolutely amazing — rich, comforting, and full of flavor. The combination of tender potatoes, crispy bacon, and melted cheese was perfect.
The atmosphere is truly special — ideal for experiencing the spirit of Budapest and taking beautiful photos. Yes, the prices are higher than average, but the experience and ambiance are absolutely worth it. I highly recommend visiting! 💙💛✨✨

I waited about 30 minutes to get in because of the line. If you want to skip the queue, come very early (before 8 a.m.) or around 7 p.m there’s almost no wait then.
The café itself is absolutely majestic. The interior is stunning, and there was live music while I was there, violin and piano, which really added to the experience. That part was genuinely impressive.
Service was okay, nothing special. The food, however, was disappointing. It’s quite expensive, which is expected for a place like this, but the quality didn’t match the price. I ordered desserts for €14 each and it was not good at all, extremely sugary and not enjoyable.
Overall, despite the food, I still think it’s worth visiting at least once. The atmosphere and décor fully live up to the hype, and the place feels magical inside. Just don’t go expecting amazing food , go for the experience.

The place is beautiful. The interior is stunning, with lovely ceiling moldings, gilding, and frescoes.
Unfortunately, our experience was RUINED because of terrible service.
We were forced to order one dessert each, even though we had been told beforehand that it was possible to share just one dessert.
When it was time to pay, the waiter even HIT the payment terminal with his hand to make my boyfriend pay faster.
He wasn’t friendly at all — no hello, no thank you, no goodbye.
It’s really a shame, because the setting is gorgeous but the service does not match it.

The place is absolutely beautiful — the architecture, ambiance, and overall aesthetic are truly stunning and create high expectations. Unfortunately, the experience did not live up to the setting.
The service was extremely disappointing. Staff appeared inattentive, unprofessional, and at times dismissive. Basic hospitality standards were not met, which significantly impacted the overall experience.
The food was equally underwhelming. The dishes lacked flavor, balance, and care in execution, especially considering the prices and the elegance of the venue. What was served did not reflect the quality one would expect from such a beautiful and seemingly refined establishment.
It is truly unfortunate when a place with so much potential falls short due to poor service and subpar food. With better staff training and a stronger focus on culinary quality, this venue could match its impressive surroundings. As it stands, the beauty alone is not enough to justify the experience
